Hello and Welcome to the Dr. Samuel H. Kouffman
Foundation. The Kouffman Foundation is named in honor
of my grandfather Sam Kouffman. Born in Rhode Island
1912, the middle of 12 brothers and sisters; Sam
Kouffman by no means lived an average life. From a very
little age Sam worked in local stores and for his family
and brothers for nickels a day. Due to the largeness of
the family Sam’s quality time with his father usually
consisted of the both of them fixing things around the
house. My great-grandfather was a trained builder and
Sam was his right hand man.
Sam later followed his older brothers footsteps and
became a respectable Podiatrist. However his life is
just getting more interesting. After finishing Med
School, he enlisted in the Army during WWII. He became
a major in the Army and helped run a POW camp in
Alaska. He used to tell us stories about his time in
Alaska. The one thing I remember the most was what he
used to tell his new prisoners: “There aren’t any walls
around this prison for a simple reason—we don’t need
them. If you want to risk freezing and starvation, we
aint going to stop you!”
A bachelor until his early 40’s he finally settled down
and married my grandmother Sarah Neiman Kouffman. They
had two kids; my aunt Judy and my dad Henry. My dad
followed in Sam’s footsteps and was his right hand man
when it came fixing things around the house. Whether it
was: the refrigerator, the sink, the toilet, the roof,
the tile, or the carpeting Sam fixed and my dad helped.
I was even lucky enough with my older brother Jesse to
help our grandfather on his various tasks. I still
remember helping him patch up some parts of his roof on
sunny afternoons in the hot Florida summers.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message and
May God bless you and keep you, and grant you a safe
passage through this mystical and majestic world.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Kouffman, Founder/CEO
